In the winter, there are two sections in Ampfield Wood that become unrideably muddy for several hundred metres. The simplest alternative is to take Knapp Lane and then Claypit Lane all the way through.

There will be very muddy sections when the ground is waterlogged after winter rain but this route is okay in winter after a dry spell. At times the Bourne river in Winterbourne runs deeper than most people will want to ford. Check the photo in the route description - this is looking back towards the

This one should be rideable through the summer jungle season - you might just want to take stock at the short bridleway section immediately after crossing the A30. You can go round this on the road if it's badly overgrown. Also, fine in winter with the usual caveat if it's very wet and muddy but there

This one should generally remain rideable through the summer jungle season, and the winter monsoons. Obviously there'll be some muddiness in the winter but nothing too horrific (you might have to climb a bank on the right to avoid a swamp under the A326, but it's pretty obvious).

Proper old skool tour. Mostly good roads but also a few lumpy lanes, glorious gravel, some short sections of bumpy bridleway, and a fine field or two. All fully rideable on any capable road bike if the ground is reasonably dry.
