In the winter, there are two sections in Ampfield Wood that become unrideably muddy for several hundred metres. The simplest alternative is to take Knapp Lane and then Claypit Lane all the way through.

There will be very muddy sections when the ground is waterlogged after winter rain but this route is okay in winter after a dry spell. You can go round this on the road if it's badly overgrown. Also, fine in winter with the usual caveat if it's very wet and muddy but there

Proper old skool tour. Mostly good roads but also a few lumpy lanes, glorious gravel, some short sections of bumpy bridleway, and a fine field or two. All fully rideable on any capable road bike if the ground is reasonably dry.
