For a change of scenery, head across the valley to the Lake District. Climb either via The Struggle from Ambleside - as this route shows - or via the easier Kirkstone Pass from Windermere, either way descending fast to Ullswater. Stop in Glenridding for coffee and cake before riding the length of England's second-largest lake.

After the valley from Appleby, start with a steady climb from Brough, crossing over Teesdale and climbing to enter Weardale. Stop in Stanhope after a descent. Tackle a few pinches on route to Alston, taking another stop if you fancy, then finish with a descent of Hartside Fell.

A big day of climbing: roll up to Hartside Fell through the valley, taking in views over to the Lake District on the way up, and enter the North Pennines proper. Stop in Alston for coffee and cake. Wind through beautiful lanes before arriving at one of this region's toughest ramps: Chapel Fell. With
