The first part continues inland through quiet farmland and rural roads before getting back in busier areas around Chiayi.

Fangliao - Yujing area
To avoid the very busy and less interesting west coast and the frustration of stopping every hundred meters at traffic lights, I created a more inland route. A lot more scenic, passing through local farms and plantations on quiet roads without major climbs. The terrain consisted

Taipei - Keelung
On our first day, we took it easy, cycling from Taipei to Keelung. From MatthewBike, leaving the city is very straightforward just follow the river, which guides you almost all the way to Keelung.

Hualien → Taitung (East Rift Valley)
If you have to choose between the East Rift Valley or the coastal road between Hualien and Taitung, I would recommend taking the East Rift Valley.
It's more scenic and quiet then the coastal road + after Taitung you still have very scenic coastal roads. So you get

Hualien → Taitung (Coastal Road)
An alternative to the East Rift Valley is to ride along the coast between Hualien and Taitung.
The coastal route includes some climbing and a few tunnels, particularly between km 20–30, and traffic can be noticeable, especially on weekends. Still, the views are good.

Luodong → Hualien (Suhua Coastal Section)
This is the famous Suhua coastal section, known for its dramatic cliffs and ocean views. The main challenge here is the number of tunnels and potential traffic, especially on weekends.
That's why we chose to skip it this time and we took the train from Loudong

Taitung → Kenting → Fangliao
One of my favourite parts of the route. Especially from Daren climbing along the coastal road down to Kenting. Very scenic.

Unfortunately I was running out of time after the Sun Moon Lake detour and took a train from Taichung to the south of Tapei. So I have only done the last 45km of this route along the river back to MatthewBike.
