This route was fine and is a quick was to get to Invercargill. The first 50km are really nice leaving Queenstown, although the road can get a little busy when tour buses and campers leave in the morning, but once past the lake in Kingston there's a nice gravel trail network

My favourite day in the south island. The Alps to Sea route is great. It starts out with a very nicely crushed gravel and the views and lakes are gorgeous.
The climbs are not that bad and all pretty moderate, but add up through out the day. There are really just two main

First 100km of this is more farmland, but there is the backdrop of mountains for most if it. Once the route turns and really starts heading for the hills things get more exciting. All the way there are plenty of back roads and dirt paths, I chose to go the more direct

A not too exciting day through the farmlands. Wineries and farm tracks with the occasional mountain view.
This day in particular was also bad weather wise, with a headwind and lots of rain in the morning.

I wasn't sure if I was going to take the west or east coast down the south island. I was slightly favouring the east and due to weather, mostly wind and rain forecasts, I ended up going this way. This is a perfectly fine and scenic route for the road bikers (tomorrow

An easy west coast route into Wellington. Traffic was never too bad, and dedicated cycle paths start near Otaki.

After a full day of dirt on Day 3, I was happy to take a more paved route around. There was still really pretty hill scenery on this route, and I cut through some farm tracks toward the end.
If I had the time and energy, following the Mountains to Sea Great Ride into Whanganui

A very great ride of old logging paths connected by suspension bridges. Would highly recommend. The timber trail is roughly 85km of dirt, so pack food/water accordingly. It is totally ridable on 40mm with no suspension if you don't mind a little underbiking.

One of my favourite days of the tour. The New Zealand parks and trails are amazing.
If you are in the North Island, Whakarewarewa Forest Park and the surrounding Rotorua area is worth every minute spent there. Beautiful, pristine trails that are lined with old trees and

I started in Auckland for convenience and schedule timing, but there are affordable flights from Auckland that will take you within 100km of Cape Reinga if you're looking to get further north.
There were plenty of dirt options leaving the city without really trying. I

I was not planning on riding down to the sign at the Bluff, but had extra time on my last day. The coolest part was seeing and meeting other riders and walkers starting/ending their tours.
If you have an entire extra day though, I'd rather spend more time in the Queesntown
