The cemetery is located on the slope of the Kiesberg, not far from Königshöher Weg, behind an obelisk that was erected in 1913 to commemorate the wars of liberation against Napoleon in 1813. In the past, the obelisk offered a wonderful view of the city. Today, however, many trees prevent a clear view of the valley. Some historical photos show the development of the cemetery, the grave sites of which were initially marked with wooden signs.

Today there are 546 fallen soldiers in the cemetery of honor, 416 of them were born in Elberfeld and 13 are foreigners. The cemetery regulations stipulated that the following dead could be buried there: Elberfields who fell in the field, those who died in Elberfeld hospitals, war invalids and those who had fallen from enemy states. All the French and English who were buried there were returned to their homeland after the war.

They were supported by August von der Heydt, who donated a piece of land on Kiesberg on which the memorial column was erected. From the plateau, which today lies slightly below the entrance to the Elberfeld cemetery, one had a wonderful view of the city almost a hundred years ago. Today the area has grown over.

The obelisk is 7.60 m high and was crowned by a bronze eagle perched on a bronze ball. This figure by the Frankfurt sculptor William Ohly was stolen and destroyed in 1987, the memorial was smeared.

In March 1920, almost a hundred years ago, several right-wing nationalists and former officers led a coup in Berlin around the general landscape director Wolfgang Kapp, the Reichswehr general Walther von Lüttwitz and the naval brigarde Ehrhardt. A year later, on March 20, 1921, memorials were inaugurated at the honorary cemeteries of the cities of Barmen and Elberfeld, followed by a memorial at the ev. Ref. Cemetery in Cronenberg on March 18, 1923.

The design of the tombs differs significantly from those of the fallen soldiers of the First World War, to which the cemetery of honor is dedicated. They are simple stone tablets, tapering at the top, with the names and dates of the deceased's life.
