The fortress on the striking mountain Asperg can be seen from afar. It has been used as a prison since the beginning of the 18th century. Since 1968, it houses the prison hospital of the Baden-Wuerttemberg judiciary.

A museum gives insights into the lives of 23 inmates from three
Centuries and shows why they were imprisoned. The House of History Baden-Württemberg has set up the impressive exhibition at this historic location. "Hohenasperg - A German prison".

This is the title of the permanent exhibition that the House of History of Baden-Württemberg has set up in the former arsenal building of the prison. Using the example of 22 prisoner biographies, the show shows how deprivation of liberty has developed as a punishment over three centuries.

Far beyond Württemberg, the Hohenasperg was long considered the political prison par excellence. The numerous names used to characterize this place testify to it: "Demokratenbuckel", "Tränenberg", "Hausberg of the Swabian intelligentsia", "Fate mountain" or "the highest mountain of Wuerttemberg" (because you need 20 minutes to get up, but sometimes years to come down again). However, the sole view of the political prisoners, above all the Vormärz and the failed revolution of 1848, falls short for the exhibition organizers.

The fortress Hohenasperg was from 1535 to 1693 an active fortress of the country Württemberg on the Asperg (also called Hohenasperg) with the city Asperg in the today's district Ludwigsburg (Baden-Wuerttemberg).
