Nowadays, Poitou donkeys are sometimes shown in zoos; in Germany, for example, you can see them in the Berlin Zoo, the Hamm Zoo, the Heidelberg Zoo, the Wilhelma in Stuttgart, the Hagenbeck Zoo, the Niederfischbach Zoo, the Nuremberg Zoo, the Hellenthal Wildlife Park, the Mundenhof Wildlife Park near Freiburg, the Lüneburg Heath Wildlife Park, the Nordhorn Zoo, the Werdum Pet Park, the Kleve Zoo, the Weeze Zoo, the Arche Warder Zoo and the Avalon Order in Biedershausen. Some of the donkeys also live in the Steveraue nature reserve in Olfen and in the Cleeberg Zoo in central Hesse. They are also bred there. In Austria, they could be seen in the Schönbrunn Zoo until May 2020.
