The Lehnitz lock, also called the Lehnitz lock, is a lock structure on the eastern outskirts of Oranienburg. It connects the different water levels of the Havel-Oder waterway between the Spandau lock, the Hohenzollern canal and the summit at the Niederfinow ship lift. It is the busiest lock for commercial shipping on the Havel-Oder waterway.
The Lehnitz lock (Lehnitz I) was built in 1910. It had a total length of 85 m and a usable length of 80 m. With a width of 10 m, four Finow barges could pass through the lock at the same time. The average drop of 5.65 m combined the previous canal levels of the Pinnow lock, the Sachsenhausen lock and the Malz lock. When the lock was built, the land was already reserved for an expected extension.
During the Nazi era, this waterway was declared particularly important during the preparations for the construction of the Reich capital Germania. The old Lehnitz lock was expanded with a second lock chamber (Lehnitz II, completed in 1940). It is 11.92 m wide and has a usable chamber length of 125.00 m. A lock operation in the new lock takes around 15 minutes, a crossing lock around 40 to 45 minutes. As in the nearby Oranienburg brickworks, prisoners from the Sachsenhausen concentration camp were also used during the construction of the Lehnitz II lock. The old lock (Lehnitz I) was shut down in 1989 and the upper gate was closed and secured with earth.
