Eclusa de Lehnitz

The Lehnitz lock connects the different water level heights of the Havel-Oder waterway between the Spandau lock, the connecting Hohenzollern canal and the summit hold up to the Niederfinow ship lift.

In the years 1906 to 1914, the Großschifffahrtsweg Berlin-Szczecin (also Hohenzollern-Kanal or Oder-Havel-Kanal), which replaced the originating from the 17th century Finowkanal as a transport route between Berlin and the Oder.

This new shipping route allowed for larger ship dimensions and now significantly less smuggling was required. For this purpose, the lock Lehnitz I was completed in 1910. It was only a few hundred meters north of the Lehnitzsee, which was also used for the naming of the lock.

After the completion of the ship lift Niederfinow 1934, the need for a larger lock in Lehnitz also increased. In 1940, the lock Lehnitz II was put into operation next to the first chamber.

The Lock Lehnitz I had to be closed because of structural damage in 1989.
Today, traffic is handled via the lock Lehnitz II.
