    Museum ship steam icebreaker "Wal"
An active museum ship of a special kind with an impressive steam engine
In 1938, the steam icebreaker "Wal" was put into service for icebreaking services in the Kiel Canal. In the 1960s, the ship was switched from coal-fired to oil-fired. The reason for the switch from coal to oil was the defective boilers that could not be repaired. Therefore, the then WSM Rendsburg decided to switch to light heating oil, which was still inexpensive at the time. The reason: fewer crew are needed than on a coal-fired ship and it is more environmentally friendly. In any case, oil-fired fuel does not produce soot. In 1990, the steamer began its journey to Bremerhaven and was restored within a year and rebuilt in important areas. A volunteer crew is successfully trying not only to maintain the steamer with its attractive and interesting equipment in the engine, nautical equipment and living areas, but also to let friends of traditional shipping experience what an old steamship has to offer on short and long trips. The steam icebreaker "Wal" goes on trips all year round. Destinations include the Weser, Heligoland, the Hamburg port anniversary, the Kiel Week and various maritime festivals on the North and Baltic Seas.

Its bulbous hull promises safety, the steeply rising stem testifies to power and assertiveness. This is exactly what the steam icebreaker "Wal" has demonstrated for 50 years on the Kiel Canal. Until 1990, the steamship, built in Stettin in 1938, was always on the canal when ice threatened to block the world's most important shipping route.

When the Federal Ministry of Transport decommissioned its last steamship, it was clear that this example of a forgotten era should be preserved for posterity.

Shipping enthusiasts from Bremerhaven took over the icebreaker, which, with its triple expansion steam engine, is a technical specialty on the North and Baltic Seas. The volunteer crew painstakingly restored the ship and carefully converted its interior for its new tasks.

The result is a ship that keeps the special atmosphere of steamboat travel alive in many ways. The hissing of the steam engine, the quiet rumbling of valves and shaft - for fans of classic drive systems, this is music to the ears. The comfort that is always associated with steamers continues in the salon and in the cabins of the "Wal".

No wonder that the sea voyages and coffee trips are so popular. The "Wal" does not offer the ambience of a luxury ship, but modern ships cannot compete with the special atmosphere on board.

I can recommend a tour of the engine room to all ship enthusiasts. I took part in this during the maritime days in BHV. The historical, technical and current details and questions were answered in a very friendly manner.
