        Cemetery

        The St. Gertrude cemetery was built in the Middle Ages. At that time it was located outside the city gates. Due to its location, the deceased from the hospice who had suffered from incurable and contagious diseases were buried here. The hospice, first mentioned in 1345, was located near the Gertrude Chapel. From the 17th century onwards, citizens who wanted to find their final resting place in nature were increasingly buried in the Gertrude cemetery.

        In 1649, the Gertrude cemetery was given a wall with an entrance gate. In the wall to the right of the entrance, the Bible verse "I know that my Redeemer lives" [sic!] (Job 19:25) is carved into a sandstone block, and in the wall to the left are the words "O ewich is so lanck" [sic!], which inspired the poet Georg von der Vring to write a poem of the same title.

        In 1791, the Lamberti Cemetery was closed. The city's deceased were buried only in the Gertruden Cemetery.
