    The Degodehaus on the market is a historic building in Oldenburg.
    Degode House in Oldenburg
    The stately half-timbered building survived the great city fire of 1676 and is considered the last medieval patrician house in Oldenburg.
    The typical late medieval residential house was built in 1502 by Christopher Stindt, as can be seen from the date on a crossbeam of the gable front. It took on its current form in 1617. Count Anton Günther (1603–1667) gave it to his Privy Councillor Mylius von Gnadenfeld as a wedding present.
    In the house, a painted wooden ceiling commissioned by Mylius von Gnadenfeld in 1645 shows an allegorical representation of the then known continents of Europe, Asia, Africa and America based on Dutch copperplate engravings. The 39 square meter ceiling painting, which had been hidden by a stucco ceiling since 1790, was rediscovered in 1992.

    Over time, the former "noble free house" changed owners several times and served various purposes.

      The Degodehaus is one of the oldest buildings in the city and is particularly eye-catching with its strikingly decorated façade. Built in 1502, it survived the great city fire of 1676 and is today the last medieval patrician house in Oldenburg. The half-timbered building got its name in 1860, when the merchant Dietrich Wilhelm Degode opened a colonial and manufactured goods shop with a coffee roaster here. The people of Oldenburg particularly appreciated the high quality of the "Degode coffee". Today there is a shoe shop in the historic building opposite the town hall.
