Coming from the Baltic Sea over the isthmus on the Priwall, the Potenitzer Wiek and the entire Dassower See and the Untertrave to Schlutup are bordered by the state border between Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein. The inner German border stood here until 1989. Today there are three nature reserves and two European reserves.
Already in 1982 the Dassower See was designated as a nature reserve (NSG). After the political change in the GDR, the riparian zones and finally the water areas as well as the Mecklenburg hinterland could be protected as European protected areas.

The whole area makes a very original impression. Due to trees and rocks that have fallen down the bank, or dense reed beds, this bank is difficult to enter. The bird life in the area is all the richer. Kingfishers breed in the steep banks, goosanders in the hollow pastures and the red-backed Warbler warbler in the thorny bushes above the red-backed shrike. The sea eagle approaches from its nearby clumps.
