A Huk is the North German term for a small, usually elevated peninsula or corner
as a coastal form. This Huk is located exactly where the mouth of the Trave
into the Baltic Sea was determined in the Middle Ages. From the perspective of the time, the course of the
Trave ended at this point in the Pötenitzer Wiek, hence the name of the town "Travemünde".

The elevation is the Hirtenberg. Due to its location, the town must have been of great importance in the Stone Age, as archaeological finds prove.
The Huk was first mentioned in writing around 1147/1149. Today, the rampart and moat system of a former fortification can still be found here. It is assumed that a motte, also known as a tower hill castle, stood there in the High Middle Ages.
Incidentally, one has been rebuilt near Lütjenburg.
