The church in Kirkeby was probably built in the 1200's and is dedicated to St. Clement, patron saint of sailors. As in many Danish churches you will also find 7 beautiful ship models here. Et al a model of the Flora, a whaler, which was originally built in 1794/95 in Flensburg for West Indies trips. Reconstructed into a whaler in Elmshorn in 1816, the flora now traveled to Greenland every year from 1817 to 1872. The 52-man crew came for the most part from Rømø. The ship sailed under the Danish flag, since Elmshorn belonged to Denmark at that time.

      Sankt Clemens Church on Romo

Römös landmark exerts a special charm and attracts over 80,000 visitors annually. Bright and peaceful, she shows herself humble and at the same time is a testimony to difficult times and a source of hope.

Römös church from the 12th century is dedicated to St. Clement, the patron saint of sailors. Saint Clement is also known as Clement of Rome, where he was once a bishop and was one of the Apostolic Fathers as the successor to the Apostle Peter.
Saint Clemens was condemned to forced labor in the quarry by the Roman Emperor Trajan and is said to have suffered a martyr's death: According to legend, he was sunk to an anchor in the Black Sea, where a temple was built. Once a year the sea is said to have miraculously divided and opened the way to the burial temple for pilgrims.

The exact date of construction of the church cannot be given. It was first mentioned in a book by Ribe Stift in 1340. The use of bricks also suggests that the west wing was built after 1250 in the Gothic period, while the low choir is again suggestive of the Romanesque period. The name “Sankt Clemens Kirche” was first recorded in 1514.

The church was expanded in several stages. Towards the end of the Middle Ages, the church was given a style typical of West Schleswig with 4 gables and a pyramidal “dry sprout”. In the course of the first economic boom, more people settled on Römö and King Christian IV ordered the expansion in 1623 with the completion of the northwest aisle in 1626, called “Noderkvist”.
During the second boom, the church was expanded again through whale and seal fishing: the aisle (Süderkwist) was completed in 1700 and the north-western aisle was completed in 1750-51.
The current entrance door dates from 1855.

These are not Viking graves, but the grave stones especially of old captains and sailors, many from the 18th century. Nevertheless of course absolutely exciting and interesting !!

"... In the cemetery, along the church wall, stand large tombstones reminiscent of the skippers and captains of Römös, some of which are richly decorated and brought by the captains themselves from their voyages across the Seven Seas Commander Matthis Schouws is the captain's two-masted schooner, accompanied by his son and saying goodbye to four waving women ".
