A ravelin is a triangular fortification or a freestanding outbuilding located in front of the inner fortifications of a fortress (the ramparts and bastions). Originally called a demi-lune after the lunette, the ravelin is placed outside a castle and opposite a fortress curtain. The ravelin is the oldest and most important external structure of the bastion fortification system. It evolved from small forts that had to cover the bridge leading over the moat to the city or the fortress gate in the event of a direct attack. This original function of protecting the gate bridge is also the source of the original Italian name "Rivellino" (meaning "small bank" or, in the German term used for this purpose, "bridgehead").
