Gap of Dunloe is a narrow mountain pass between the MacGillycuddy Reeks and Purple Mountain, amazing 11 kilometres of it! The spectacularly winding road here descends into The Black Valley passing five lakes. The Head of the Gap is its highest point.

Highest point on the walk from Kate Kearney's Cottage. Unfortunately there is no pub/restaurant/bar here. Only again after the way back (or you can continue to the lake and take the boat if you are there without a car). So pack food.

If you are hiking the Gap of Dunloe, you have made it! This is the highest point so pause a while, take in the view and appreciate your efforts. To the east rise up the Purple Mountain Group and to the west the MacGillycuddy's Reeks. The Gap of Dunloe was formed during the last ice age in Ireland, around 25 000 years ago.
