    St. Michaelis is a former monastery church of the Benedictine monastery St. Michael and one of the main churches in the city of Lüneburg. The monastery used to play an important role and the abbot had a high position within the region. The monastery school was very well known and Johann Sebastian Bach even sang as a choir boy in the Mettenchor from 1700 to 1702. For this reason, the church square is now called Johann Sebastian Bach Platz.

The St. Michael's Choir is now one of the largest choirs in Northern Germany. In the church's rich musical history, one name stands out in particular: Johann Sebastian Bach. Alongside the classic "Bach cities" such as Eisenach and Leipzig, Lüneburg also played a significant role in his life. Between 1700 and 1702, the then-young Bach was a member of the St. Michael's Mass choir. In the years that followed, he became one of the greatest Protestant church musicians and remains unforgettable to this day.

              A Latin and private school once stood on Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Platz, right next to St. Michaeliskirche.
              It had such a good reputation that even students from Thuringia and Saxony were taught here.
              So-called "free meals" were provided for the children of poor people who had a good singing voice.
              In the spring of 1700, Johann Sebastian Bach came to Lüneburg as an orphan.
              For two years he sang and made music in Lüneburg and benefited enormously from the lessons he received from Georg Böhm, one of the most famous organists of his time, who was then working in the neighboring St. Johanniskirche.
              In 1955, when the buildings had long since disappeared, the square was named in memory of the famous composer who once attended the choir school here.
