The so-called Wasserviertel on the Ilmenau is one of the most beautiful areas in Lüneburg's old town. In this romantic area, in which the harbor was once located, there are so many sights that you could actually show your own series of pictures about them. That is probably why a particularly large number of restaurants have settled here. In summer there are tables and chairs outside where you can enjoy the wonderful atmosphere with a glass of beer.

The most striking building is the tower of the Abtswasserkunst, built in 1530. It belongs to the abbot's mill and once directed the water into the city and even into some patrician houses. Opposite is the Lüner Mühle, which once belonged to the Lüne Monastery. Today there is a hotel in the historical buildings.

While strolling through Lüneburg's Historic Water District, you'll surely notice the industrial mill, also known as the Abbot's Mill, built in 1908. Until the 1980s, 60 tons of grain were milled here exclusively using water power. Today, the building is part of a hotel complex. An Italian bistro invites you to linger on the ground floor.

If you cross the bridge at the Abbot's Water Tower, you'll see the Lüne Mill from 1576. This is where farmers once delivered the tithes due to the Benedictine nuns at Lüne Abbey. The tower should actually be called the Brewing Water Tower, because the Brewers' Guild and the Abbot of St. Michael built it on the former monastery grounds. For a long time, both mills milled grain exclusively for the monastery's needs.

The Abbot's Mill stands on a former ducal property that Henry the Lion deeded to the Abbot of St. Michael upon the death of his firstborn son. In return, the monks were expected to look after the soul of the deceased.
