This waterway is just over 45 kilometers long. It connects the Rhine naval port near Duisburg to the inland port of Datteln. To make it navigable, 5 canal levels with associated locks are required up to Datteln.

The name Rhine-Herne Canal refers to the origin and destination of this important shipping route. Along the canal route there are beautiful views of the landscape and the industry on the banks. On a trip with us you will rediscover this side of the Ruhr area!

For a long time the canal was only considered a transport route for steel, coal, iron and ore, but today it is a meeting point for cyclists, hikers and water sports enthusiasts. Where the ports were still used for handling goods back then, attractive marinas for recreational boating are now being built. Even rowing and canoeing clubs are increasingly discovering the canal for sporting activities.

Hardly any other canal offers such a charming contrast between nature and industry. The Rhine-Herne Canal runs right through the Emscher Landscape Park, also known as the green heart of the Ruhr metropolis, right up to the backdrop of the winding towers and locks.
