As the eldest son of King Frederick II of Denmark and Norway, Christian IV was born on April 12, 1577 at Frederiksborg Castle. As his father's successor, he ruled from 1588 to 1648, also as Duke of Holstein. During his long reign, he repeatedly tried unsuccessfully to turn the Danish-Norwegian state into a great power. His active building activity led to the creation of the cities of Kristiansand, Kristianstad and Glückstadt, as well as Christianshavn, now a district of Copenhagen. After Oslo was destroyed by fire, he had the city rebuilt elsewhere in 1624. After that, it was called Christiania in his honor for 300 years.

This memorial stone next to the town church commemorates the founding of Glückstadt (incidentally the only town in Schleswig-Holstein founded by a king) in 1617.
