Glückstadt is located on the Lower Elbe in Schleswig-Holstein, about 62 km north-west of Hamburg. It is the second largest city in the Steinburg district after Itzehoe. The city is known nationwide for its matjes production and for the Elbe ferry from Glückstadt to Wischhafen in Lower Saxony.

Glückstadt is the only city in Schleswig-Holstein that was founded by a king, in 1617 by Christian IV, King of Denmark and Norway and Duke of Schleswig and Holstein.

The historical city center, the successful efforts of urban redevelopment and the culinary specialty "Glückstädter Matjes" make the city particularly interesting for day tourism.

Glückstadt is located on the Elbe, but anyone who wants to watch the seagoing ships go by will be disappointed. The main fairway is on the opposite bank of the Elbe in Lower Saxony, separated by the upstream river island "Rhinplate". Even from the ferry terminal you can only see the ships passing by at a distance of approx. 1.8 km. A trip to the locks of the Kiel Canal in Brunsbüttel is therefore recommended to "watch the ship".
