The picturesque village of Amden is a perfect starting point for various hikes. The view of the Walensee is simply fantastic. The chairlift takes you comfortably up to the Mattstock.

Amsterdam
Amden was first mentioned in a papal bull from 1178. After that, the pope takes the Schänis monastery under his protection and also confirms the possessions in Amden. Excavations carried out in the Wildmannlisloch revealed the oldest traces of human habitation. The native residents of Amden were of Rhaetian origin. Later Alemanni are said to have invaded from the west.
The authorities changed several times. Amden was subordinate to the Dukes of Swabia, the Lenzburg family, the Schänis monastery, the Counts of Kyburg, Monfort, Werdenberg and Habsburg, and later the Estates of Schwyz and Glarus (1438 to 1798). The more recent development is under the affiliation to the canton of St. Gallen.
For many years Amden was economically dependent on itself, there was no transport connection with the valley. In the years 1880/82 the road Weesen - Amden was built. With the opening of the stagecoach connection with Weesen on August 1, 1892, trade and change as well as tourism came to the community.

By the way, Amden means "Amoenus mons," which means "lovely mountain." Today's Amden is just as lovely. Dreamy yet bustling, untouched yet not isolated. The location is perfect; the view couldn't be better.
