    Since the Reformation year 2017 Georg Burkhardt, known as Spalatin as a life-size sculpture, can be found again on the wide stepped square in front of the church. The largely unknown reformer, without whose active help Martin Luther would hardly have survived, worked the last 20 years of his life at this church and is also buried here. It was he who organized the spectacular "kidnapping" of Luther to the Wartburg and is otherwise considered the "helmsman of the Reformation".

            The St. Bartholomew's Church, whose crypt dates back to the High Romanesque period, is Altenburg's oldest church. From 1525 Georg Spalatin worked as a town priest and later as a superintendent in the town and was instrumental in implementing the Reformation on site. Martin Luther himself preached several times in the church and in 1523 married the pastor Wenzel Linck with a bourgeois daughter. This marriage went down in history as one of the first priestly marriages. The St. Bartholomew's Church was awarded the European Heritage Seal in 2011.
