Fishing has long been Skagen's most important source of income. However, the city had no port, and the fishermen had to pull their boats on the sand or by horse winds. In the 1880s, there was a plan to create a connected through canals, located at the same time Skagerrak and Kattegat double port, but the considerations quickly rejected. A decade later, the plans for the construction of a port had come to fruition in 1904.
