The Bismarck Memorial is the largest in the world. It is 34 meters high. The Casparus Bastion, part of Hamburg's ramparts, stood on the site of the memorial. It was demolished in 1804, and the site was converted into a landscaped garden.

One of the co-initiators for the monument was the then Mayor of Hamburg, Johann Georg Mönckeberg.

The monument itself measures a total of 34.3 meters, with the Bismarck figure being 14.8 meters high. If you stand at the foot of the base and look up, you will notice the imposing sword, which is eight meters long.

Around the base of Otto von Bismarck's monument are figures that are supposed to represent the Germanic tribes.
