The large concert hall with almost 2,100 seats is the heart of the Elbphilharmonie. The plaza is the interface between the traditional port warehouse and the glass new building of the Elbphilharmonie: At a height of 37 meters, the public viewing platform offers a panoramic view of the city and the port.

Approximately halfway down the long side, the plaza opens up to eight meters high in an arch on both sides. Two large sections of the facade allow a view of the city center and the port. On the outdoor plaza you can walk all the way around the Elbphilharmonie.

The plaza is accessible to everyone. Since capacity is limited, visits are regulated by issuing Plaza tickets.

Tickets from the machines for the same day are free. A processing fee of €2 is required for pre-bookings.

Open daily from 9 a.m. to midnight.

The building was used to store cocoa, tobacco and tea, but lost its original use with the transfer of general cargo to other parts of the port. In everyday life he was therefore often called cocoa bunker. This use ended in 1990 completely. The three half-gantries renovated by a circle of friends at the eastern end of the Elbkais are quasi-witnesses of this period.

The Elbphilharmonie project is the result of a private initiative by project developer Alexander Gérard and his wife, art historian Jana Marko. They developed the idea and usage conception and introduced it to the Hamburg Senate as an alternative to the then planned "Media City Port" in October 2001.

Construction began in 2007 and after enormous cost explosion and construction freeze, the key handover (according to a new contract) on 31/10/2016 was met. The inauguration of the Great Hall and the entire building was celebrated on January 11, 2017 with the concert "Zum Raum wird hier die Zeit" by the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester.
