    Where the Wilhelminapark is now located, the air was smelly and unhealthy around the turn of the century. A group of prominent people from Meppel came around 1905 with the initiative to raise the ground between the Reest and the Stationsweg from the Werkhorstbrug to the track and make it suitable for a luxurious park where people could live and walk. Villa parks arose in many cities in the vicinity of the station at the time. The plans received popular and council support. In 1907 the Burgerweeshuis came with a loan on favorable terms. The chair of the working group, contractor / architect Marten Otten, laid the foundation for what would later become the Wilhelminapark with his design.

    Garden architect Leonard Springer (1855-1940) from Haarlem was commissioned - with the design by Marten Otten as the starting point - to come up with a balanced design. He envisioned a park with long and short sight lines, surprising vistas, flowing paths with squares, in which no tree or shrub had an accidental place. In 1908 he came up with his first sketch, based on Otten's design.
    After the First World War, the construction of the park was tackled energetically, after which the walking park was opened to the public on 8 June 1919.
