A monument was erected in the Rose Court in 1949 in memory of the people from Meppel who had to pay for their resistance with their death. Their names are immortalized on the round low wall behind the statue. Titus Leeser from Ommen made the bronze male figure with a child (the future) in his right hand, while holding a snake in his left hand as a symbol of the fight against evil. In the strip between the rosarium and the current resistance monument, a number of Germans (and one Polish) were buried for a short while around the liberation of Meppel. They included the victims of the Allied bombing of the station on April 8, 1945. The bodies were later moved to the Zomerdijk and transported across the border from there.
