Ponte de Berna

Not only the rustic wooden construction itself is worth seeing, but also the views on both sides of the bridge! The Bern Bridge is one of the first three bridges (along with the Mittlere Brücke and the Sankt-Johannbrücke) built in Freiburg in the middle of the 13th century. Before that, the city's citizens had to cross the Saane on a ferry boat. In 1340, the Bern Bridge was sawn up due to an enemy attack; today it is the last covered wooden bridge in Freiburg.

The first bridge in the city:
The Bern Bridge was originally supported by wooden trestles. Its current appearance dates back to 1653. Its central pillar made of molasse and the roadway were renewed in 1853-54; its roof dates from 1855.
The three bridges of the lower town (Bernbrücke, Mittlere Brücke, St-Joahnnbrücke) were all built in the middle of the 13th century, around a hundred years after the city was founded by Berthold IV von Zähringen in 1157. Before the Bern Bridge was built, the Saane crossed by a ford with a ferry boat. The water reached under the rock face on which the former Augustinian monastery, a large white building, is enthroned. Today there is a parking lot here (right). In 1340 the bridge was sawed up during an attack by the Bernese in order to cut off the path of the enemy. The Bern Bridge is the last covered wooden bridge in the city.
