The Herbringhauser dam (until 2006 "Upper Herbringhauser dam") is a drinking water dam in the Bergisches Land (North Rhine-Westphalia). It was built from 1898 to 1901 by the city of Barmen, which was still independent at the time and now belongs to Wuppertal. The Herbringhauser Bach is dammed. Until December 31, 2015, the Wuppertaler Stadtwerke (WSW) was the operator. On January 1, 2016, the dam became the property of the Wupperverband, which had acquired it together with the Kerspe dam from the WSW for EUR 46 million.

"... The Herbringhauser Talsperre (until 2006" Obere Herbringhauser Talsperre ") was built from 1898 to 1901 by the city of Barmen, which was still independent at the time. The construction cost 1,500,000 marks at the time. To be able to build the wall, quarries had to be purchased. The stones and earth were transported by field railway. For this purpose, 2 locomotives and tipping wagons were taken over from the Barmer-Beyenburger Eisenbahn and brought to the construction site via a siding During the excavation for the dam, 7,000 m³ of earth and 1,500 m³ of rock were removed, while 42,000 m³ of greywacke quarry stones were used in the construction of the wall.
The dam serves to supply the city of Wuppertal with drinking water. The dam has been rebuilt and renovated several times in the course of its operation. For example, in 1933 the dam was raised by 4 m. In the years from 2000 to 2003, the wall received a water-side geomembrane seal (plastic sealing membrane), which was applied to the existing shotcrete shell. In 2004 the dam wall and the upstream storage water area were placed under monument protection.
In 2016, the Wupperverband took over the dam from WSW Energie & Wasser AG. ... "

The Herbringhauser dam is a pure drinking water dam. The lake is completely fenced. Water sports activities are of course prohibited. The dam was rebuilt and renovated several times in the course of its operation, most recently from 2000 to 2003. For this measure, the water was completely drained. It received a water-side geomembrane seal (plastic sealing membrane), which was applied to the existing shotcrete shell. It also includes an inspection walk and drainage. The Herbringhausen waterworks is located below the dam.
