    The Schurenbachhalde is an approximately 50 meter high (highest point 86 m above sea level) [1] former coal mine in the Essen district of Altenessen. The dump is named after the "Schurenbach" water body buried under it from the 1970s [1] and is located directly on the Rhine-Herne Canal, between Emscherstraße and Nordsternstraße and near the Nordsternpark Gelsenkirchen.

    The heap was used by the Zeche Zollverein to store overburden until it was closed in 1986. Until the mid-1990s, other coal mines also dumped their overburden on this mine dump. The dump was then renatured and converted into a landscape monument.

    On the top of the heap is the landmark of the 15-meter-high sculpture Bramme for the Ruhr area by the American artist Richard Serra, which was erected in 1998.

    The Schurenbachhalde is part of the Route of Industrial Culture.
