St. Nicolai, consecrated to St. Nicolaos, the patron saint of boatmen and seamen. Financed and built by order of the patricians and guild of boatmen. The landmark of the water district in Lüneburg. Also called the "Citizens' Basilica". Construction began in 1407.
Rises up mightily and has a special structural feature, thanks to an architectural trick, it looks longer from the inside than it is when you look at the choir. On the other hand, you have the feeling that everyone is sitting in the first row. It is almost as high as it is long.

The church belongs to the basilica type, while St. Johannes and St. Michaelis are hall churches. The model was St. Marien in Lübeck and St. Nicolai in Wismar. Particularly impressive is the approximately 7.20 meter wide and 28.70 meter high Gothic central nave with the eight-pointed star vault, which is unique in northern Germany, and with its medieval character.

The high altar comes from the St. Lamberti Church, which was demolished in 1861, and is accordingly called the Lamberti Altar. Behind the altar are the display panels of the Heiligenthaler altar, with what is probably the oldest picture of Lüneburg.
