The Michaelsberg is one of the oldest settlements in the town of Bad Dürkheim. Celts, Romans and Franks have already left their mark here. Where Celts and Romans worshiped their many different pagan gods, Christians later often built churches or chapels with St. Michael as their patron saint. Simply park in the large car park in front of the giant barrel, cross the street and you're at the top.

This church was dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The name (coming from Hebrew) means "Who is like God?". He is often depicted - on paintings or as a statue - with a flaming sword, and occasionally a lance. Michael is - together with Raphael, Gabriel and Uriel - one of the four archangels who (according to human imagination) occupy the highest rank in the heavenly hierarchy of angelic beings. Their common feast day in the saints calendar is September 29th.

The oldest vineyard in the Palatinate on the "Monte sancti Michaeli" was mentioned in a document as early as 1155. She later became known through the pilgrimages to the chapel on the Michelsberg. These pilgrimages took place on September 29th, the name day of St. Michael. The market that took place around these pilgrimages on Michaelsberg was then called Michaelismarkt. At some point there was too little space on Michelsberg and the hustle and bustle of the pious church fathers became too colorful.

There are numerous benches here and a particularly beautiful view of DÜW.
Information boards with the history of the Michaeliskapelle are located both on the front of the chapel (hard to read in sunlight) or slightly above the chapel (= information board of the "Geo-Adventure Trail").
The interest group "Michaeliskapelle e. V." cares for and maintains this special place and its chapel with many hours of voluntary work.

The view is wonderful for the short climb. You can overlook the parking lot, the saltworks, the barrel and part of Bad Dürkheim. On the other side you can see the vineyards. There are benches with tables where you can have a picnic. The chapel can also be combined with a tour of the old town, the spa park or the vineyards.

The pilgrimages were always held on September 29, the name day of Saint Michael. The pilgrims wanted to obtain forgiveness for their sins by buying letters of indulgence. The "Monte sancti Michaelis" was mentioned in a document as early as 1155.
Due to the large number of people, more and more farmers and winegrowers were attracted, who transported their goods to the Michaelsberg in wheelbarrows and mainly offered wine, sausage and bread there.
The old Michaelis chapel was demolished in 1601, and since 1990 a new chapel has adorned the Michelsberg, built with donations from Dürkheim citizens to commemorate the origins of the sausage market.
