This imposing structure, over 300 meters long, was originally built to extract salt. Ultimately, this was discontinued entirely in 1867. However, in the context of the spa town of Bad Dürkheim, which was developing during this period, it was quickly established that salt flats, in addition to their purely economic function as salt production sites, also have a very high health value. When the brine is trickled from the Maxquelle springing up in the Kurpark, large quantities of minerals are released into the air in the form of microscopically fine droplets, the aerosols, which are absorbed by visitors through their respiratory tract. It was recognized very early on that inhaling this air on the ambulatory and in the immediate vicinity of the salt works can have a soothing effect, especially on respiratory diseases. This effect can still be experienced today on a tour of the salt works.

Partly burned down twice already, but always rebuilt .... just one of many landmarks of Bad Dürkheim - we won't let that be taken away from us (now with fire protection system and permanently in operation, so that the brushwood never dry and therefore does not easily ignite becomes)

The 333m long saline can be walked on at a low price, on the north side with a small terrace and a beautiful view of the Michaelis chapel (the origin of our world-famous and largest wine festival in the world) ... a tiny little café/bistro is located inside the saline (in summer is also served outside)

Adjacent is the spa garden, a water playground fed by the Isenach, the weekly flea market and a small outdoor fitness park as well as the spa and park clinic.

A small toilet on the south side is also available (for a fee)

The graduation tower is one of the landmarks of the Palatinate spa and district town. In its current form, it was built between 1847 and 1850 and with a length of 333 m is one of the largest in Germany. After being destroyed twice by arson in 1992 and 2007, it was restored and last reopened in 2010.

Due to the salty aerosols and the rainwater from the roof, the sandstone pillars of the graduation building are very weathered and washed out. If you take a closer look at these washes, you think you can see faces or mythical creatures: they are called "saline spirits".
Since 2016, the promotion association of the Gradierbau has been collecting money for the restoration of these sandstone pillars. The names of major donors (private/companies) can be read on various stones on the new pillars.

The Bad Dürkheim graduation building, one of the longest of its kind in Germany, is the last of six original graduation towers that were part of the former “Philippshall” salt works. It was already a successor to an even older graduation building that stood on the same site. This building was built in 1847, at a time when salt production from salt pans had already become relatively less important. It was ultimately discontinued in 1867. However, in the context of the spa town of Bad Dürkheim, which was developing during this time, it was quickly discovered that salt pans, in addition to their purely economic function as a production site for salt, also had a very high health value.

The 333-meter-long graduation building, the last part of the "Philippshall" salt works built in 1847 in the east of the spa park in Bad Dürkheim, will be a permanent construction site for the next 20 years or so. But hardly anyone will notice anything. Because the project is divided into exactly 160 small construction phases - between five and ten of them are to be tackled and completed every year. In the end, the landmark of Bad Dürkheim will rest on exactly 160 new sandstone plinths, which will be erected in place of the original, more than 170-year-old and sometimes rather dilapidated pillars.

If you don't like it that humid, you can also walk close to the building. You can even smell it downstairs. Admission costs only 1.50 euros and children and spa guests are free. So you can do it. There are enough parking spaces; even at the weekend when the Kurpark is totally overcrowded.
