The castle itself was surrounded by geometrically designed moats and served for many years as a summer residence and widow's seat of the Reussian ruling family. That is why it is drawn as a moated castle among the citizens of Gera. After extensive redesign of the attic by architect Eckler, the home folk high school was housed here from 1920-1933. During the Second World War it served as a military hospital. In 1975/76, the filling of the moats led to the structural and landscape disadvantage of the palace complex. An allotment garden was created in the park.
