In 1752 a wooden chapel "Christi Flagellati" stood here.
In 1764 the community received permission to build a brick chapel in place of the wooden one. This was built in 1765-1768 by master builder Thomas Mühlmayer. In 1787 the parish priest Weinig asked the ordinariate in Regensburg to move the pilgrimage from the saints near Tachau to the Steinberg, which was closer.
In 1685 Bärnau was severely damaged by a severe fire disaster. The citizens of the city vowed to undertake a pilgrimage to the 14 Holy Helpers in the Paulaner monastery in Heiligen near Tachau (Bohemia) every year on the feast of John the Baptist (June 24).
One reason for the request to move it was that Emperor Joseph II ordered the Paulaner monastery in Heiligen to be closed. There was also a ban on pilgrimages abroad.
The Ordinariate complied with this request, and in 1787 the church was consecrated. At that time, the pilgrimage tradition to the Steinberg began. It was only temporarily interrupted by the turmoil of war.
