                                When the old Elbe Tunnel, also known as the "St. Pauli Elbe Tunnel", opened in 1911, it was a technical sensation. Today it is a nostalgic and lovingly maintained piece of Hamburg history - and has already celebrated its 100th anniversary.

                                The striking square domed building on the St. Pauli Landungsbrücken houses the machinery and the four large elevator cars that have been transporting people and vehicles to a depth of almost 24 meters since 1911. After 426.5 meters under the Elbe and through two tiled tubes with a diameter of 6 meters, Steinwerder resurfaces.

                                Incidentally, the Elbe tunnel is open all night, so a real go-home tip after every night tour.

                                The Old Elbe Tunnel was the continent's first tunnel under a river - and became necessary because the growth of the Port of Hamburg increasingly shifted to the southern side of the Elbe and required improved transport connections.
                                It was finally built on the model of the Clyde Tunnel in Glasgow after plans for the suspension railway, traject and viaduct had been discarded.
                                During the Second World War, the shaft of the Elbe Tunnel on the southern side of the Elbe was badly hit by bombing. However, many of the majolica depicting aquatic animals and folk motifs have been preserved.
                                Since 2003, the Old Elbe Tunnel has been under monument protection - and on the occasion of its 100th birthday it was also honored as a "Historical Landmark of Civil Engineering in Germany". Numerous film teams have filmed down here, and this veteran tunnel has also hosted a successful world record set by model railroaders. The St. Pauli-Elbtunnel can also be rented for events.
                                A slightly different idea for a walk: After crossing the tunnel, you can then enjoy the incomparable panorama from the southern bank of the Elbe with a view of the edge of the harbour, the Michel and the "Rickmer Rickmers".
