The Speicherstadtmuseum documents the history of construction and use of the historic warehouse district in Hamburg. It is located in the room - right on the ground floor - of the L memory block from 1888, which was designed by the Hamburg architect Georg Thielen in Neo-Gothic style (Hannoversche Architekturschule) and in the part used by the Speicherstadtmuseum about the original riveted skeletal structure made of wrought iron features. The museum is conveniently located at Sandtorkai 36 in the neighborhood of the HafenCity, the model train location Miniatur Wunderland, the Hamburg Dungeon and the Spice Museum and is best reached via the underground line 3 (station Baumwall).
In the Speicherstadtmuseum there are regularly public special events such as tea tastings or thriller readings as well as public tours through the Speicherstadt, which also include a guided tour through the permanent exhibition. In addition, during school holidays, the museum offers public guided tours - the "discovery tours" - targeted at children from 6 to 12 accompanied by adults.
The Speicherstadtmuseum was opened in 1995 as a privately operated branch of the Museum der Arbeit, which belongs to the Stiftung Historische Museen Hamburg. It emerged from the exhibition Speicherstadt - monument and place of work for 100 years, which was first shown in the summer of 1988 on the occasion of the centenary of the Speicherstadt and repeated in summer 1989 on the occasion of the 800th harbor birthday. Back then, the quartermaster company Eichholtz & Consorten provided two storage shelves to the Museum of Work in Block R at St. Annenufer 2 on the 3rd and 4th floor, free of charge. In 1995 Eichholtz & Cons. also the sponsoring for the newly founded Speicherstadtmuseum. Since 1996, the Speicherstadtmuseum has been supported by HHLA Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG. Since October 2011, the Speicherstadtmuseum is located in Block L of the Speicherstadt, Am Sandtorkai 36.

Whether miniature wonderland, moated castle or traditional ship harbor - a trip to the warehouse district should not be missed on any visit to Hamburg. Since July 2015, the Speicherstadt, together with the Kontorhausviertel including the Chilehaus, has been Germany's 40th UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Hamburg's warehouse district combines tradition and modernity. Where merchants in the Hanseatic city used to trade coffee, spices and cocoa, advertising experts are now discussing their next strategy.
In 2013, the Speicherstadt celebrated 125 years of history.

Probably one of the most famous districts of Hamburg. It is a lot of fun to move from the east (looking at the moated castle) to the west and finally reach the Elbe Philharmonic Hall over the Sandtorkai.

"The history of the warehouse district, unique in the world!
Grapes, coffee sacks, bales, barrels and sugar claps ... In the authentic setting of Speicherblock L from 1888, the Speicherstadtmuseum shows how the district residents (warehousemen) used to store, sample and refine high-quality imported goods such as coffee, cocoa or rubber. Other key topics are the tea and coffee trade, which was located in the warehouses of the warehouse district, and the construction history of the warehouse district, which is illustrated with numerous historical photos and plans. Children also have a lot of fun here, because they can touch a lot of things and "Kalle, the little neighborhood man" leads them through the museum with a rally.

Public tours, tea and coffee tastings and crime readings take place regularly. During the school holidays there are also the popular "discovery tours" through the warehouse district and the museum, which are aimed specifically at children from 6 to 12 years.

You can also visit the "Kaffeeklappe" café, which serves coffee and cake as well as tea specialties. "

The Speicherstadt is the most visible expression of an epoch that Hamburg does not like to talk about: the colonial era. For its business with colonial goods such as coffee and cocoa, the Hanseatic city built from 1888 the Speicherstadt as "customs foreign". Goods that passed through the free port and were temporarily in the warehouse district did not have to be cleared. Even after the end of the German colonies, the Hanseatic city continues to earn its trade in the other colonial powers.

Hamburg's warehouse district is the world's largest historic warehouse complex, located in the port of Hamburg. It covers the area between Bäumenall and Oberhafen. It has been a listed building since 1991 and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since July 5, 2015 with the neighboring Kontorhausviertel and the Chilehaus under the name Speicherstadt and Kontorhausviertel mit Chilehaus.
The Speicherstadt was built between 1883 and 1927 south of the old town on the former Elbe islands and residential areas Kehrwieder and Wandrahm as part of the free port of Hamburg in three sections, the first section was completed in 1888. The construction manager was the chief engineer of the Hamburg Building Deputy Franz Andreas Meyer. He was supported by the hydraulic engineering director Christian Nehls and the construction director Carl Johann Christian Zimmermann as well as a consortium of 15 engineers, 24 architects and architectural draftsmen. Georg Thielen designed around 30 of these stores on Neuer Wandrahm, Am Sandtorkai, Auf dem Sande, Brook and Kehrwieder.
Since January 1, 2003, the Speicherstadt has been removed from the area of the free port; on March 1, 2008, it was declared administrative with the new development area on Großer Grasbrook as the HafenCity district in the Hamburg-Mitte district.

The development of the Speicherstadt in recent years is very interesting. However, it is all very much designed for tourism. It is worthwhile to explore the Speicherstadt and from there to cross the Old Elbe Tunnel. The visit to the dockland (fishing port) is recommended, the building has something.

The Speicherstadt, now Unesco Heritage 2015, has undergone a major transformation. The free trade zone is dissolved and the lively chaos of barges have replaced barges of Fleet tours. It has become an event and office district and has created the old deposits for coffee, tea, spices and carpets with dining and dungeon space, miniature wonderland, coffee roasting, coffee museum, Elphi and much more. The building has remained, a listed building, and is popular with millions of tourists.

The Hamburger Fleete emerged in part from the mouths of the Alster and Bille into the Elbe, which were then used for drainage and as city ditches for defense; on the other hand, they were created as further overflow ditches of the Alster, which was later dammed. Finally, the canals were increasingly used for the movement of goods.
