The lock was built as the Niegripp lock during the construction of the Ihle Canal from 1865 to 1872. From 1926 to 1938 the Plauer and Ihle Canal were expanded to form the Elbe-Havel Canal.
The Niegripper connecting canal was built to the southwest with the new Niegripp lock.
The stem gates of the old lock were dismantled and an earth wall was built in the lock chamber as a barrier between the canal and the Elbe.
