      Fish was important to Altona and Hamburg was constantly vying for supremacy. Finally, at the newly built fishing port (1894), a new hall was built on the Elbe to enable auctioning, trading and shipping of fish landed there. Shortly afterwards, the Altona fish market achieved higher sales than the Hamburg one. Hamburg then put its own auction hall across from the Altonaer. In 1934 the feuding fish market companies merged, and shortly afterwards Altona Hamburg was incorporated. Both auction halls were badly damaged in the bombing raids on the city of Hamburg in 1943 and only poorly repaired. The Hamburg auction hall was demolished in 1971 to make room for a planned office and commercial building with high-rise buildings. Today there is a parking lot at the site. The same fate threatened the Altona auction hall, it fell into disrepair until it was declared a monument in 1976. Today the hall is mainly used for advertising and PR events of large corporations. I myself was able to experience a Christmas party there once.
      The hall is regularly flooded during high water. But that doesn't hurt her.
