The monastery is located on the Lorze river and was founded in 1231 by a donation from Baron Ulrich von Schnabelburg and his wife. The Frauenthalense necrology mentions as a co-founder of the monastery Count Ludwig von Frohburg – November 22nd: “Ludwig graff von Froburg, mittsiffter, anno 1246”. In 1253 it was incorporated into the Cistercian order. The people of Schwyz destroyed most of the buildings in 1351 during a dispute with Duke Albrecht. During the Reformation the convention was dissolved, in the Counter-Reformation the faith community formed again. Since 1586 she has regained the right to elect abbesses.
The complex, designed according to Cistercian tradition as a building area, was renovated in the 17th and 18th centuries. The east and south wings with the chapter hall and the refectory with the cloister were built by the Vorarlberg architect Johann Moosbrugger in the late 17th century. In the monastery church there is an organ by organ builder Walter Graf from 1975 in the case of the previous organ by Lucerne organ builder Sylvester Walpen from 1852.
