The 210 m long and approx. 45 m wide Prinzenteich is located in the south of Eisenach below the Marienhöhe villa colony on the B19. In 1854, an extinguishing water pond was created in the area of the former swampy goose lawn. The Duchess Helene of Orleans, who is popular and committed in Eisenach, donated money for this project. Born in Ludwigslust, she married the French heir to the throne, Philippe de Orleans. When he died in an accident, she was unsuccessful in her son's succession dispute, left her homeland and lived in exile in Eisenach from then on. Their sons – the princes – enjoyed skating on the newly created pond, which is where the name Prinzenteich came from. Today the small pond is a popular excursion destination with a restaurant, café and boat rental.
