Esta caminhada leva através de mundos montanhosos alpinos de Basel para Chiasso, influenciada pelo Mediterrâneo. Há lagos magníficos e picos rochosos, bem como aldeias pintorescas ao longo da trilha de longa distância. Você caminhará da parte de língua alemã para a parte de língua italiana da Suíça, experimentando a diferença entre as culturas nas cidades e paisagens no meio.
Na Via Gottardo, você segue a rota comercial histórica que conecta a Alemanha com a Itália desde o século 13. Com o Passo do Gotardo no centro, esta rota foi considerada a travessia alpina mais importante por muito tempo. Os viajantes teriam transportado mercadorias sobre o passo de 6.889 pés (2.100 metros) antes da abertura dos túneis ferroviários e rodoviários através do mastim.
Sua caminhada começa no belo Basel. Daí, você caminha pelas colinas suaves do Jura e através do Mittelland suíço até o Lago Lucerna. No Vale do Reuss, a Via Gottardo leva você sobre pontes históricas até o famoso passo. Ao sul do maciço, a paisagem e o clima mudam: você pode ver a influência italiana nas aldeias idílicas e na vegetação mediterrânea. De Lugano, você caminhará até impressionantes pontos de vista sobre o Lago Lugano brilhante. Finalmente, você chega ao seu destino Chiasso, uma cidade bonita que fica diretamente na fronteira italiana.
Cada uma das vinte etapas desta Coleção termina em uma cidade ou cidade com uma boa escolha de acomodações. Um destaque especial é definitivamente a estadia no único Hospício de St. Gotthard no Passo do Gotardo. Em alguns trechos, há a possibilidade de encurtar a etapa com teleféricos ou balsas. O ponto de partida da Via Gottardo é na estação ferroviária de Basel e o destino Chiasso também tem uma estação ferroviária.
