The West Highland Way was opened in 1980, becoming Scotland’s first Long Distance Route and now designated by NatureScot as one of Scotland's Great Trails. The route stretches 96 miles (154 km) from Milngavie on the northern edge of Glasgow to Fort William, known as the outdoor capital of Scotland. Designed as a multi-use trail, it’s popular with walkers, runners and Cyclists, either on self-guided adventures or as part of an organised event.
The running is fantastic, following excellent trails along loch shores, across wild moorland and over a historic mountain pass, with a huge variety of scenery to keep you entertained. Almost everyone starts in Milngavie and heads north but there’s no reason why you can’t run from Fort William.
The West Highland Way Race is a classic ultramarathon held in June each year, starting from Milngavie. There are six checkpoints on the race so we’ve split this Collection into seven stages; however, you can always link two or more stages together to suit your itinerary. All stages have accommodation and transport options at the start and finish, with the route roughly following the A82 road and a convenient train line. You’ll pass several cafes and restaurants on route as well as shops to resupply.
The fastest known times (FKTs) were both set during the official race. Lucy Colquhoun holds the women’s record of 17 hours 16 minutes and 20 seconds, set in 2007, while Rob Sinclair holds the men’s record of 13 hours 41 mins 8 seconds, set in 2017. Most runners take at least 24 hours during the race or several days self-supported.
Wild camping is permitted in most of Scotland and the West Highland Way makes a great fastpacking expedition, carrying a superlight tent and everything else you need to be self-sufficient. Note that wild camping is prohibited along the eastern shore of Loch Lomond (stage two). If you plan to camp in this area please use the designated campsites.

The first section of the West Highland Way escapes the busy outskirts of Glasgow, heading north through Mugdock Country Park and past Drymen to the first significant climb: Conic Hill. The views from the top are superb – well worth the effort to get there – looking across island-dotted Loch Lomond and…

Running north from Beinglas Farm you’ll leave the loch shore and follow the River Falloch and its glens north, heading for Rannoch Moor and Glen Coe. If you’re enjoying the run at a more leisurely pace rather than racing the clock, the Falls of Falloch are a spectacular stop-off, while Crianlarich is…

This section of the West Highland Way takes you from Crianlarich, where there’s a train station, past Auchertyre Farm and north to Bridge of Orchy. Leaving Bridge of Orchy, you’ll follow the last section of a sheltered glen to Inveroran where you’ll join the Old Military Road and start the climb onto Ranoch Moor. The next section is glorious in good weather but the rain and wind can be unrelenting up on this high and exposed moorland on a bad day…

This is the most mountainous stage of the West Highland Way, with the highest point of the route and – if you’re lucky with the weather – the best views. It’s only 9.7 miles (15.6 km) and doesn’t have a huge amount of ascent, it just all comes in one climb – the Devil’s Staircase.

The run along the final miles of the West Highland Way into Fort William features a big climb out of Kinlochleven and an undulating traverse below the Mamores before descending through Glen Nevis to the finish.
