The bust of the Romanian voivode Michael the Brave has been located in the street bearing his name, at the foot of the medieval citadel, since 2007. The bas-relief bust is cast in bronze, weighs over 50 kilograms, and stands on a high monument pedestal. It was donated to the city by the Prahova County Council. The work of art was created by the artist George Dumitru. Together with six other sculptors from the National Association "Mihai Viteazul," the artist set out to create a bust for each place where the great Romanian ruler worked and accomplished significant things for the unity of the Romanian people.
Mihai Viteazul, born in 1558 in Târgu de Floci in Wallachia, was voivode, or ruler, of Wallachia from 1593 to 1600. For a brief period (in 1600, to be precise), he was the de facto first joint ruler of the three medieval states that make up present-day Romania: Wallachia, Transylvania, and Moldavia. Therefore, Michael the Brave became an idol for all nationalists who sought the unification of these territories in the 20th century.
