For my London visit, I added a bike ride, taking a great, traffic-free route east towards the Olympic Park via a sequence of parks, rivers, and canals. The route showcased the generally good cycle infrastructure in London and made the most of a dull, breezy day. That flow was abruptly shattered in Bloomsbury when, braking for a pedestrian crossing, I was suddenly shunted from behind by a hire e-bike, sending me flying over the handlebars. Fortunately, I was unhurt and the bike was undamaged, but my Garmin mount did not survive the impact. CLAIMING FROM HIRE E-BIKE FIRMS On the way home I discovered: While the accident was clearly due to the e-bike having poor or inadequate brakes—which the rider even admitted—the hassle of making a claim is likely not worth a broken Garmin mount. For others involved with hire e-bikes, remember this critical advice: The rider should be your first call for damages; make sure you get their personal details alongside the bike's information. Claiming against the firm is difficult as standard e-bikes aren't legally required to carry third-party insurance. Success relies on proving the company failed its duty of care by equipping the bike with unsuitable braking systems
