The Munt la Schera Tunnel (also known as Munt la Schera Tunnel, Livigno Tunnel) under the Munt la Schera is a road tunnel connecting the Engadin in the Swiss canton of Graubünden with Livigno in the Italian province of Sondrio. It was built for the construction of the dam Punt dal Gall on the Swiss-Italian border, which was completed in 1968. He served for the transport of building material for the 130 meter high arch dam. After the wall was completed and the lake was flooded, the tunnel was opened with restrictions also for general traffic. Owners of the tunnel are the Engadine power plants.
Today, the road tunnel for cyclists is gespert. It runs from mid-June to mid-September every day between 10:00 and 15:00 clock about half-hourly a paid shuttle bus for cyclists.
In 1996, my wife and I rode a tandem vehicle through the tunnel from Italy to Switzerland. We drove at the very end of the car column behind a bus with a speed of 40-50 km / h. That was an experience.
The tunnel is 3385 meters long and has a gradient of over 90 hm (about 3% gradient towards Switzerland).

My only experience by car was very bad because I was in the tunnel stopped for more than 1 hour because the truck in front of me could barely pass given the narrowness of the tunnel.
I recommend accessing the tunnel website to find out how to cross the tunnel by bicycle. You cannot cross riding it; The only alternative is to do it by public transport.
If you cross the tunnel from Livigno, you can take a very nice circular route crossing the ports of Fuorn, Stelvio, Foscagno and Eira. It is a very hard and demanding route but truly spectacular.
