Wartberg Tower/Observation Tower (28m) - Alzey/Worms 🚴‍♂️
The first references to the medieval "watchtower" date back to the early 15th century. Field names such as "am Wartenpfad" (Wartenpath) or "uff dem Wartenberg" (Upper Wartberg) suggest that the watchtower must have existed before this time. It may have been part of the construction program of Alzey Castle. As a deep-set castle, the castle certainly required a watchtower or signal tower. Perhaps it was also built as an "outpost" of the city fortifications. What is certain is that the tower was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War and again during the War of the Palatinate Succession. A French military map from the late 17th century notes: "Tour ruynée" (Ruined Tower).
It was only the Romantic enthusiasm for the Middle Ages that brought the tower back into focus. In 1858, the restoration of the "Warth Tower on the Wartberg" was celebrated. The tower, rebuilt in the "old style" with a distinctive crenellated crown, no longer served a military function. The watchtower became an observation tower.
At the end of World War II, the tower was destroyed again in a massive bombing raid on January 8, 1945. The target was the railway bridge on Kreuznacher Strasse. As we now know, a navigation error led the US Air Force to drop its high-explosive bombs in the vicinity of the watchtower. For the people of Alzey, it became the "savior of the city." It was assumed that the city center, including St. Nicholas Church, was the target of the attack. Only the confusion of the church tower with the watchtower due to poor visibility saved the city.
More than 15 years after its destruction in the war, the reconstruction of Alzey's "savior," which many had called for, was completed in 1961. However, it proved to be of limited durability, as a violent storm caused its collapse in February 1970. And once again, it was the initiative of the Alzey citizens that ensured that the tower, which had long since become a landmark of Alzey, could be rebuilt in 1989. 🚴‍♂️
