On May 4, 1985, the new Rossmarkt fountain was inaugurated in the center of Alzey. It represents the "horse of the minstrel Volker von Alzey with a vine-covered bowl" based on a design by the Neustadt artist Professor Gernot Rumpf. Volker von Alzey, who according to the Nibelungenlied was a "man of noble origin" as "Baron of Alzey", was from Alzey. In addition, as a "knight of noble descent" he held a prominent position in court life and in military leadership in the medieval kingdom of the Burgundians.

The construction was made possible by the unprecedented financial commitment of many Alzey citizens, clubs and associations. The impetus for the fundraising campaign for the construction of a fountain on the Rossmarkt was given by the then mayor Walter Zuber on the occasion of the inauguration of the Rossmarkt as a pedestrian zone on September 17, 1982.

In the autumn of 1982, a working group made up of representatives of the administration, clubs, banks and other institutions from Alzey announced an ideas competition for the design of the fountain in the Allgemeine Zeitung. By April 1983, a total of 15 proposals had been received, from which Professor Gernot Rumpf's design was selected.

The artist's idea
The minstrel and musician Volker, knight, master of a knightly entourage and banner bearer, has his home in Alzey. He left his warhorse at the watering hole of the horse market and mingled with the people. The horse carries the minstrel's fiddle on one side and his shield with the coat of arms on the other. The Nibelungen hoard (hoard = treasure), symbolic of the Nibelungenlied and of Volker's friendship with Hagen von Tronje, who sank the Nibelungen treasure in the Rhine, lies in the water of the bowl. This is overgrown with vines and grapes.

With these ideas from the artist, the tranquility of the monument becomes a living reality. Volker and Hagen, Kriemhilde and Brünhilde, Siegfried and the Burgundian King Gunther, Giselher and Gernot, the main characters of the heroic epic, and not least the horse and rider, emerge from the Nibelungenlied, gather in front of the sunken treasure and complain that, like the murder of Siegfried, it brought vengeance and ruin to the Burgundians.

In 1985, Neustadt artist Prof. Gernot Rumpf created the Rossmarkt fountain. The horse and fountain represent a memorial to a famous son of Alzey: the legendary minstrel and knight Volker von Alzey from the Nibelungenlied. The 13th-century epic has its historical core in the 5th-century Burgundian Kingdom, which counted Alzey as one of its focal points. It describes the noble Volker as a "man of fighting prowess" who allegedly carried the banner of the Burgundian king in the campaign against Saxony. This proves that, despite being of lower nobility, he held a high military rank. In the battle against the Huns, the Nibelungen hero was killed at the Battle of Etzelburg near Gran. But Volker von Alzey was not only famous as a fighter and tournament rider; his minnesang and poetry are also mentioned in the myth.

Therefore, the depiction of the coat of arms on the horse is complemented by the fiddle of a minstrel on the other side. The horse itself—a status symbol of knights and nobles—is powerfully built and clearly recognizable as a coldblood, one of the heavy warhorses of the Middle Ages. Coldbloods are still bred today as calm, undemanding, and very powerful horses.

In addition to Volker von Alzey's horse, the design of the fountain bowl is also inspired by the Nibelungen saga. According to the legend, Hagen von Tronje, steward to the Burgundian king, sank the Nibelungen treasure in the Rhine.

Even though the historical figure of Volker von Alzey is difficult to grasp and much of the tradition is based on the Nibelungenlied, it is hard to deny that his personality and myth are still present in Alzey today. A glance at the city's coat of arms shows a minstrel's fiddle beneath the Palatine lion. The Alzey-Worms district also features the instrument in its coat of arms.
